Joinville, located in northern Santa Catarina, is the largest city in the state, with 616,317 inhabitants (2022 Census), surpassing Florianópolis. It is the third most populous city in southern Brazil, behind only Porto Alegre and Curitiba, which is just 130 km away. With an area of 1,127.94 km², it is the seat of the Metropolitan Region of Joinville. The city stands out for its high Human Development Index (0.809), ranking 21st in Brazil and 2nd as the best city to live in the country. Known as the "Manchester of Santa Catarina," "City of Flowers," "City of Princes," and "City of Dance," it hosts the world's largest Dance Festival and the only Bolshoi Theater School outside Russia. In the early 20th century, Joinville’s industrial elite founded the Commercial and Industrial Association, now known as the Joinville Business Association. Today, the city contributes 18.9% of Santa Catarina's GDP. Joinville is one of the three largest industrial hubs in southern Brazil, driven by its network of highways and railways. Despite the growth of the service sector, industry remains strong, with key sectors including metal-mechanics, chemicals, plastics, textiles, and software development.
